What was one big thing that was happening in the 1800 ?
It was a time of great change as there was an influx of people viewed as working class or lower class moving into the big cities
They came in search of work and housing however many cities were very unprepared
How did the upper classes react ?
Began to make areas in the city where only the upper classes would socialize
The city of London had a duality of class as the West tended to be for those of higher class and the East saw crime and poverty
What was a shilling shocker ?
Stories about the lower classes written in order to shock and entertain the upper classes
Conventionally it would focus on the taboo acts of the lower classes however this is inverted in Jeykll and Hyde as the upper class Jeykll is seen to be doing such taboo acts associated with lower class
Why does Stevenson invert the conventions of a shilling shocker ?
To challenge his readers to accept the world of evil behavior is not solely the domain of the lower class
