Why does steveson present Utterson in a certain way in the begging on the novella ?
He needs to make Utterson as creditable as possible
He is first and foremost presented as ‘the lawyer’ who is a professional and used to dealing with strange cases
Additionally he is conveyed to be a serious character ‘ cold and scanty’ yet ‘ lovable’
Why does steveson describe Utterson as serious and reliable ?
He juxtaposed the description at the end by describing him as ‘loves Le’
Encourages a positive response from the reader having established he is both serious but likeable
How else is Utterson described to make the reader trust him ?
We are told ‘wine was too his taste, something eminently human beaconed from his eye’ however Stevenson makes the point that he is ‘austere with himself’ which conveys a tone of self control to the reader
What is Utterson always inclined to do ?
‘ inclined to help rather than reprove’
How does Utterson represent the Victorian gentleman ?
He is serious yet human and strict but tolerant of others
To be tolerant of others would not have been shared universally across Victorian society so he is embodying the core values of the Victorian ideal and Gentleman
