Q

How does medicine now compare to a 100 years ago

A

Knowledge and medical advancement: Far less scientific knowledge. Example DNA discovery in 1950’s. Work by Watson, Crick and Rosalind Franklin

Lack of specialisation. Doctors were mostly GP’s. Now over 50 specialities

Medicine was quite paternalistic in nature

Wider role for doctors - CAMP structure

Antibiotics were a game changer;
Penecillin - could treat pneumonia and scarlet fever. Now can only treat syphillis due to resistance

Software and Technology in medicine
RIO, Electronic records
Document everything in notes. Patient history. Much more efficient now
Discharge letters can be sent immediately to free up hospital beds
POTENTIAL RISK - data breach, cyber attacks. Data security measures

MDT- multidisciplinary team approach. 100 years ago doctors used to practice in isolation.
