Why do you want to study medicine
.Uses complex science to help people and actively make a difference
.Science of human body is extremely complex with many nuances involved
.Learning about cardiac cycle and how electrical impulses caused it was interesting as well as challenging
.Enjoy caring for people, voluntary work at a hospice serving refreshments `and chatting with patients
.Appreciative and really feel like you are making a difference to others.
.Working in a dynamic team environment with emphasis on communication, which I saw on work experience

Why not nursing or another healthcare profession
. Due to training doctors gain extensive knowledge beyond speciality
. Have ultimate responsibility for patient and drive decision making process
. Doctors more likely to have lead roles in research activities
. Nurse practitioners can undertake many roles of GP’s however limitations on what they can prescribe and can’t treat children under 5
. Praise nurses; they can spend lots of time with patient and it is arguable that they form a closer bond with patient
What steps have you taken to find out whether medicine is right career for you?
.Work experience, a 3 day GP placement. I recognised sheer variety in medicine. Importance of communication was realised for issues such as domestic abuse. How scientific knowledge alone was not enough to be a good doctor. Issues which are also non scientific as well
Psychiatry day, learn about how progressive medicine is. Ie schizophrenia no clear cause. Only theories, shows how medicine is constantly changing. Intellectually challenging
What have you read or experienced to prepare for entry into medicine
Voluntary work at a hospice. Communicating with patients allowed to me develop my empathy. Showed me the importance of being empathetic and conversational with others.

Reading about specific condition of schizophrenia in Oxford handbook of psychiatry

GP-wide variety of roles, science alone not sufficient to be a good doctor
Surgery-importance of teamwork. Colectomy to remove tumour. Anaesthetists, nurses and surgeons work together to achieve common goal
Psychiatry-Empathetic patient oriented communication to challenge delusional beliefs of the patient. In charge of catering for UK government during the pandemic. Non-confrontational
