What is gender dysphoria?
A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender, of at least 6 months’ duration
Gender dysphoria in children (criteria, 6 out of 8)
Strong desire to be of the other gender, dressing, playing, having toys that conform to the other gender, preferring playmates of the other gender, disliking one’s sexual anatomy, desire to have sex characteristics of the other gender
Gender dysphoria in adolescents and adults (criteria, 2 out of 6)
Wanting to be of the other gender and be treated so as well, disliking one’s sex characteristics and wanting to have those of the the gender, be convinced one has the typical feelings and reactions of the another gender
Prevalence for natal adult males and females?
Natal males: 0.005-0.014%
Natal females: 0.002-0.003%
Main difference between criteria for children and adults?
Children’s criteria are more behavioral than adolescents/adults
Rates of persistence of gender dysphoria from childhood into adulthood?
Natal males: 2.2-30%
Natal females: 12-50%
Trajectories of development for natal males
Early onset: if discontinued, almost all identify as androphilic
Late onset: can come as a surprise to close ones, almost all are gynephilic
Development in natal females
most common course is early-onset, almost always gynephilic, (with late onset: androphilic)
