Trait Theory of Leadership
“Great Man”, born not made, leadership is a trait
Situational (Fiedler’s Contingency Model)
Effectiveness of a particular style depends on the situation
Transactional
Managers appointed, reward motivation, short-term, cope, behavioural/situational theories.
NOT REQUIRED: personal example/risk, high emotional style, high energy
Transformational
Leaders emerge & inspire, and are long-term, creative & charismatic. REQUIRED:
- personal risk
- lead by example
- high emotional style
- high energy
Charismatic Leadership
- Followers attribute heroic abilities when observing certain behaviour
- Best with:
- Ideological component and/or
- Environment contains high degree of stress / uncertainty
- Too much can be a bad thing
Shared Leadership
Simultaneous, ongoing, mutual influence process in which people share responsibilities for leading.
Suitable for:
- high complexity
- high interdependence
REQUIRES: high creativity
Servant Leadership
- Philosophy more than a theory
- Leader focuses on increased service to others rather than themself
Level 5 Leadership
- High performing IC
- Contributing team member
- Competent manager
- Effective leader
- Executive
