How sensitive and specific is dipstick testing of urine?
Highly sensitive if both leukocyte esterase and nitrite are positive.
Highly specific if both are negative.
Less so if only one is positive – in this case an MSU should be sent
What defines a drug allergy?
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are adverse effects and are not due to a true allergy. A true allergy would constitute a rash or anaphylaxis.
In what situations may prophylactic antibiotics be of use?
Recurrent UTI’s where the underlying cause cannot be corrected
Give some disadvantages of the use of prophylactic antibiotics?
Development of resistance, Side effects e.g. CDT diarrhoea, allergy and cost
What antibiotic can be used if C.diff present?
Nitrofurantoin
