Define intercultural competencies
The ability to develop targeted knowledge, skills & attitude for visible behavior and communication which are effective and appropriate in intercultural situations.
Explain the difference between stereotypes and prejudices
Stereotypes are mental shortcuts, that can be unconscious but generally should come with reflection and have a function.
Prejudices are stereotypes that lack critical reflection
What are unconscious biases and how can they be measured
aka implicit bias, are social stereotypes and prejudices about groups of people that individuals form / have outside their conscious awareness.
- often not complying with core values
- happens because of desire to categorize social worlds
- can be triggered (e.g. working under pressure)
What is the cultural quotient
CQ is a prediction measurement of a person’s capability to adapt while interacting with others from different cultural regions = to relate and work effectively across cultures
What are the four capabilities of the cultural quotient?
- Drive (motivation)
interest and confidence level at functioning effective in cultural setting - Knowledge (cognition)
know how cultures are similar / different - Strategy (meta-cognition)
how to make sense of cultural diverse experiences #W-curve - Action (behavior)
capability to adapt behavior to different cultures #no roleplay, experience!
