Describe a sesamoid bone.

A

A small smooth, rounded structrue that form where tendons pass over a joint. They serve to reduce friction, increase mechanical effect, and protect and stabilize the tendon. Usually only one surface is articular. Periosteum is lacking (periosteal response will be absent).
