Serology Flashcards
What does serum chemistry profile measure?
enzymes, electrolytes, and can evaluate several body systems and their functions
Within what period of time after collection must a blood sample be centerfuged and seperated?
30 minutes
What is the function of the kidneys?
kidneys function to filter waste products out of blood
Define BUN.
blood urea nitrogen
What causes elevated BUN in blood?
decreased glomerular filtraton
What is the normal BUN range for cats?
10-30mg/dL
What is the normal BUN range for dogs?
10-20 mg/dL
Define azotemia.
also called uremia - when BUN is elevated
What are three possible causes of prerenal azotemia?
increased protein catabolism, decreased renal perfusion, or high protien diet
What are the characteristics of renal azotemia caused by increased protein catabolism?
mild increases in BUN - can be caused by internal hemmorhage, necrosis, fever or corticosteroids
What are the characteristics of renal azotemia caused by decreased renal perfusion?
BUN usually less then 100 mg/dL - can be caused by shock, dehydration or heart disease
What are the characteristics of renal azotemia caused by a high protein diet?
seldom causes a clinically significant increase except in animals with occult kidney disease
