Q

What checks do you use to verify a Drilling Contractor has addressed risk of over-head equipment?

A

The rig contractor should have a DROPs program. Verify that the DROPs program has assessed the rig and all deficiencies or concerns identified in the audit were addressed and closed out. Confirm that the RM and crews are diligent re: derrick inspections, conducting over-head work, etc.

Q

What steps do you personally take with rig crews to reduce risk of Line-of-Fire incidents?

A

Establish clear expectations with crews to be accountable to plan their work, address hazards and watch out for themselves and co-workers. Ensure a Mentor is identified for new workers. Ensure extra attention is is given to safe work practices during hazardous activities ie. Rig moves, rig floor, handing tubulars, etc. Also, ensure workers are comfortable to stop and ask (Stop-Think-Go) if concerned about a task or safety - this especially apply to “Out of Scope” work.
