Pressure Control Flashcards

Q

What are the regulatory requirements for Kill & Bleed-off lines?

A

Bleed-off lines must meet the minimum pressure rating requirements for the class of well being drilled Bleed-off lines must have minimal nominal diameter of 76mm throughout. Class V, VI and Critical wells requires 2 bleed-off lines. Bleed-off line connections must be flanges or clamp style connections and designed in accordance with API or ANSI Standards. Certifications for bleed-off line components must be at the rig.

Q

How do you validate integrity of casing bowl welds to surface casing and side outlets?

A

Pressure test the weld with N2 to 80% of the surface casing collapse pressure rating. Pressure test the casing bowl side outlets using a cup packer positioned in casing below the surface casing head. Also, important to confirm Welder has B pressure ticket. Ensure Welder has a copy of the weld procedures included in the drilling program.

Q

How do you qualify pressure test results?

A

For a satisfactory pressure test, all components must maintain a stabilized pressure of at least 90% of the required test pressure over a minimum 10 minute interval.

Q

If a BOP component is malfunctioning what should you do?

A

Stop operations and discuss plan forward with Drilling Supt. BOP repairs should be conducted as soon as it is practical and when safe to do so.

Q

If you have to top-up the accumulator during drilling operations, what is it telling you?

A

The BOP system most likely has a leak which needs to be repaired soon. Internal leaks can can contaminate hydraulic oil with wellbore fluids and cause serious equipment integrity issues and frozen BOP hydraulic lines during winter operations.

Q

Explain how you would validate controls for a pressure systems on rig (mud pumps, BOPs, boiler, etc.) ?

A

Confirm that the system is rated for desired working (and maximum) pressure range and is properly pressure tested. Check that all pressure equipment has valid certifications at rig. Check that all pressure lines have proper securement. Check that PSV are properly set and relief piping is proper spec, secured and discharges to a safe area.

Q

Explain why a gas influx can be difficult to identify when using water base mud in the HZ interval.

A

The HZ interval can act as a separator and allow the gas influx to collect along high spots in the HZ length. As a result, the trapped gas could be cirulated out in slugs if circulating conditions change (ie. higher pump rate, pipe rotation, sweeps, etc.) or while curculating bottoms-up following a trip.
