Non weight bearing
Increased ESR and CRP
Risk factors
Rheumatoid arthritis and SLE
Joint replacement
Invasive joint procedures (e.g. steroid injections, arthroscopy)
IV drug use
Diabetes mellitus
Immunosuppression
Chronic skin infections
Investigations septic arthritis
Joint aspiration - culture, cytology
Blood culture, CRP, ESR
mANAGEMENT septic arthritis
Prosthetic -> urgent osteo referral
Native -> IV antibiotics 2 weeks
Fluclox 2g before culture
Ceftriaxone if sus gonorrhea
Then PO if improving after 2 weeks
Findings synovial fluid septic
Yellow, gree, turbid
WCC>100, 000, neutrophil predominance
