How is osteomalacia
Replacement of resorbed bone with unmineralised osteoid (bone softening secondary to low vit D levels)
presentation of osteomalacai
Lower back pain
Bone pain in shoulder, ribs, pelvis or legs
Muscle pain and weakness, waddling gait (proximal myopathy)
Impaired physical function
Fractures especially femoral neck
What is osteomalacia in children
Rickets
Causes of osteomalacia
Vit D deficiency
Chronic kidney disease #Drug induced anticonvulsants
Inherited - hypophosphatemic rickets prev vit D resistant rickets
liver disease eg cirrhosis
Coealiac disease
Investigations for osteomalacia
Bloods:
Low vit D levels
Low calcium, phosphate
Raised alkaline phosphatase
Xray - translcent bands - loosers zones or pseudofractures
Treatment for osteomalacia
Vit D supplementation
Calcium supplementation if dietary caclium inadequate
