Sepsis and IV fluids Flashcards
What can low albumin cause?
Oedema in the legs
What does oliguric mean?
low urine output
What is the daily sodium intake requirement?
1mml/kg e.g 70mml
What is the primary determinent of water distribution?
osmotic pressure
Why is renal sodium handling important?
to maintain homeostasis
What happens to oncotic pressure in sepsis?
It drops
What is the risk from too much water?
hypernatraemia
What are the two types of hypovolaemia?
True - a decreased volume of the fluid (blood) within the circulatory system in which the fluid leaves the body, for example in bleeding.
Relative - some fluid leaves the circulatory system, but not the body
What are crystalloids?
Water to which salts have been added.
What can sepsis result in ?
systemic vasodilatation
leaky capillaries
shock
multi-organ failure
