Sepsis Flashcards

1
Q

Define sepsis?

A
  • Organ dysfunction due to dysregulated response to infection
  • Suspected infection + 2 of the following:
    • Hypotension (SBP <100)
    • Tachypnoea (>=22 breaths/min)
    • Altered mental status (GCS <15)

Q

Describe a quantifying score for mortality in suspected infection/sepsis?

A
  • qSOFA score
    • Score > = 2
      • RR > 22/min
      • Altered mental state
      • Systolic BP < 100mmHg
    • Full SOFA score used in ICU

Q

Describe the management of sepsis?

A
  • Cause of patient’s sepsis should be treated (eg UTI)
  • Sepsis 6
    • Administer high flow oxygen (SpO2 > 94%)
    • Take blood cultures
    • Give broad spectrum antibiotics
    • Give IV fluid challenges (500ml crystalloid over 10 mins)
    • Measure serum lactate
    • Measure hourly urine output

Q

Describ septic shock?

A
  • Sepsis with underlying cellular/metabolic abnormalities associated with increased mortality
  • Persistence of the following symptoms despite fluid resuscitation:
    • Hypotension requiring vasopressors to maintain MAP>65
    • Serum lactate >2mmol/L
