Separating mixtures Flashcards
What is a mixture
It is two or more substances that are not chemically combined
What is dissolving
It is separating solids by adding water into the mixture
What are some examples
Sand and salt. When water is added only the salt is collected because sand is insoluble
What is filtration
It is separating an insoluble solid from a liquid ( the water is not 100 percent pure )
What is the solid that is collected in the filter paper called
Residue
What is the liquid collected in the beaker called
Filtrate
What is evaporation
Evaporation is separating a dissolved solid from a liquid
An example of evaporation ( mixture )
Salt that is dissolved in water ( salt Water )
What is distillation
It is separating a liquid from a solution
What is the water collected called
Distillate
Is the water is collected is it pure( distillation )
Yes
Is the water collected pure? ( filtration )
No
What is chromatography
It is separating a mixture into its coloured components
What if the dye is in a higher position of the paper
It is more soluble
What if the dye is in a lower position of the paper
It is less soluble
