What is a phrase?
A group of words without a finite verb.
- can never stand on its own
- contains a single idea
- AKA a ‘fragment’ of a sentence
E.g, The shop [around the corner] is open at 8am.
What is a clause?
A group of words with a finite verb.
- conveys a single idea
- can stand on its own if a main clause
E.g, [The van came* to a halt] outside her house.
*This is the finite verb. Clauses always have one.
What are the classifications of phrases?
- adjectival phrases
- noun phrases
- adverbial phrases
What are the classifications of clauses?
- the main/independent clause
- the subordinate/dependent clause
Under subordinate clauses:
- adjectival clause
- noun clause
- adverbial clause
Types and classifications of sentences?
Types:
- statements
- questions
- exclamations
- imperatives (AKA commands)
Classifications:
- simple sentence (1 finite verb, 1 idea)
- compound sentence (2+ finite verbs. Sometimes 2 simple sentences connected with conjunctions)
- complex sentence (one main clause and one subordinate clause).
