Sensory systems Flashcards
What does a sensory receptors do?
TRANSDUCTION
responds to one of the sensory queues = discriminated between stimuli
What does a sensory neuron do?
ENCODING
Process info about sensory queues
- duration, location, modality based on pathway signalling
What is the sensory transduction cascade?
the energy from the stimulus is converted into an electrical signal
Whats a generator potential?
Produced by a current
Sensors out background noise enviro = potentially lead to AP
Gives a graded response/ depolarisation to stimuli
What is stimulus strength encoded by?
- Amp of generator potential
2. Frequency of AP
Whats the name of the somatic sensory system receptor for the face?
Trigeminal ganglia
Whats the name of the somatic sensory system receptor for the body?
Dorsal root ganglia
Whats a dermatone?
Region of the skin innervated by a single DRG
What are receptor fields?
Areas of the skin surface over which stimulation results in a change in rate of action potentials
-Greater density of receptors = smaller receptive field = greater spatial acuity
What are the 4 types of mechanoreceptors?
- Meissners corpuscle
- Merkel Disks
- Ruffini’s corpuscle
- Pacinian corpuscle
