Sensory System - Module 3 Flashcards
What are the outer parts/layers of the eye?
- Sclera - (outermost layer) (tough/connective tissue), “white” of the eye
- Cornea - clear/circular part at front of sclera which allows light rays to enter
- Choroid Coat - (middle layer) contains blood vessels and ciliary muscles
- Retina (innermost layer) - contains nerve cell layers which transmit impulses to the brain through rods and cones
What are the inner parts of the eye?
- Iris - (surrounds lens) colored portion of the eye which contains muslces to contract/dialate pupil (muscle strings attached to pupil in diagram)
- Lens - (behind pupil) refracts light to focus on retina
- Aqueous Humor - refracts light and fills space b/w cornea and iris
- Vitreous Humor - refracts light and fills space within retina
What is the pathway of light refraction within the eye?
- Cornea
- Aqueous Humor
- Pupil
- Lens
- Vitreous Humor
- Refracted to focus on retina and picked up by cones/rods to transport to brain for interpretation through optic nerve
How is the eye protected? What are Lacrimal Glands and Conjunctiva?
- Enclosed in skull’s bony socket
- Lacrimal gland produces tears
- Eyelids/lashes
- Conjunctiva (mucous membrane) lines eyelids and covers the front of eye
What are the parts of the Outer Ear?
- Pinna (Auricle) - (visible part of outer ear/outermost layer) leads to auditory canal (external auditory meatus)
- Auditory Canal - (middle layer) secretes earwax to protect ear
- Tympanic Membrane (Eardrum) (innermost layer) recieves chanelled energy and vibrates when sound waves hit to produce noise
What are the parts of the Middle Ear?
- Ossicles (malleus/mallet, incus/anvil, stapes/stirrups) - convert energy into sound waves
- Eustachian Tube - connects middle ear to pharynx (throat) and allows pressure equalization on both sides of tympanic membrane
What are the parts of the Inner Ear?
- Cochlea - (snail shell appearance) contains delicate hair-like cells which make up the organ of Corti, picking up sound waves to send to auditory nerve
- Auditory Nerve - picks up sound waves to send to the brainstem/thalamus for interpretation
- Semicircular Canals - contain fluid and delicate hair-like cells that bend when liquid moves to end information to the cereberum to help maintain balance/posture
Which sense includes a mass of muscle tissue that contains papillae?
what is papillae?
Taste
papillae are bumps along the top of the tongue–“taste buds”
What do olfactory receptors do?
They are responsible for odor detection, enabling the brain to signal sense of smell
If someone has a cold, what will happen to their sense of taste?
Sense of taste will diminish due to the sense of smell being more sensitive than taste
