Sensory system Flashcards
The sensory system is part of what system
nervous system
What is the sensory system?
A system of sensory neurons that detect changes in the body’s environment and signal the CNS to react
What are sensory receptors?
Part of the sensory neuron that receives stimuli from the body’s environment
If the stimuli is strong enough
neurons trigger and electrical impulse and they travel to the CNS for interpretation
You put your arm to the fire what happens ?
Stimuli triggers the sensory receptors on your hand and an electrical impulse travels to the CNS, the brain allows you to feel the sensation of heat on your hand and signals your muscles to move your hand
What is the sense of proprioception?
The body’s sense of body position
Enables body to know where its parts are in relation to one another
What are other senses other than the 5 basic ones?
Proprioception, balance, temperature, pain
What is a general sense?
Sensation felt throughout entire body and has sensory receptors within other organs
Touch, temp,pain
What is a special sense?
When there is a specific organ devoted to that sense
What is the sense of touch?
The ability to sense texture, pressure, and other tactile stimuli
What is a mechanoreceptor?
react to mechanical stimuli such as trexture, vibration, pressure, work in the sense of touch
What is the sense of temperature?
The ability to detect changes in temperature
Utilizes thermoreceptors
What is the sense of pain?
A general sense that with pain receptors in the skin, muscles, joints, bones, most internal organs
What is a nociceptor?
A pain receptor, detects stimuli from damaged tissue, associated with sense of pain
What is a proprioceptor ?
A type of mechanorecpetor found in tendons, muscles, and joints that sense location of body parts in relationship to one another
