Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What are the cranial nerves? (Definition)
The cranial nerves are a set of 12 paired nerves in the back of your brain. Cranial nerves send electrical signals between your brain, face, neck and torso.
Olfactory nerve (1)
Function: Sense of smell
Optic nerve (2)
Function: Sense of sight
Oculometer (3)
Function: Movement of eyeball, constriction of pupil for bright light or near vision
Location: Midbrian
Trochlear (4)
Function: Movement of eyeball
Location: Midbrain
Trigeminal (5)
Function: Sensation in face, scalp, and teeth, contraction of chewing muscles
Location: The pons
Abducens (6)
Function: Movement of eyeball
Location: The pons
Facial (7)
Function: Sense of taste, contraction of facial muscles, secretion of saliva
Location: The pons
Vestibulochlear (8)
Function: Sense of hearing, sense of equillibrium
Location: The pons/ medulla oblangata
Glosspharyngeal (9)
Function: Sense of taste, secretion of saliva, sensory input for cardiac, respiratory, and blood pressure reflexes, contraction of pharynx (swallowing)
Location: Medulla oblangata
Vagus (10)
Function: sensory input for cardiac, respiratory, and blood pressure reflexes, sensory and motor input to larynx (speaking), decreased heart rate, contraction of alimentary tube (swallowing), increased digestive secretions
Location: Medulla
Accessory (11)
Function: Contraction of neck and shoulder muscle, motor input to larynx (talking)
Location: Medulla
Hypoglossal (12)
Function: Movement of tongue
Location: Medulla
