Sensory Components Flashcards
Topographical orientation
Refers to client’s ability to navigate the environment or community to reach the desired destination
Cues to support this skill:
★ landmarks
★ route knowledge
★ spatial updating
★ self-motion
★ visual
★ auditory
Low vision intervention strategies:
Lighting
★ Environmental lightning
- address glare reduction
★ Task lighting
- promotes near distance vision
- place directly over task
- encourage placement over non-dominant arm
Low vision intervention stratgies:
Contrast
★ Change the background to increase contrast
★ Low contrast environments are more difficult
★ May use sunglasses or filters to promote contrast
Low vision intervention strategies:
Patterns
★ Reduce patterns and use solid colors only
Low vision intervention strategies:
Magnification
★ Relative distance magnification (moving closer to an object increases the size of the object)
★ Relative size magnification (use of large-print materials)
Low vision intervention strategies:
Organization
★ Encourage consistent location / placement of objects in order for the objects to be easily accessed
Alternative sensory stratgies to low vision
★ Use of text-to-speech technology to allow information to be read to the client
★ Use of audiobooks
★ Use of tactile cues
When considering interventions for low vision, what might be an appropriate strategy to implement if a student struggles with reading endurance and is required to read throughout the day?
Alternative sensory strategies such as text-to-speech or audiobooks to engage in extensive reading tasks as typically required by students
