Sensory Integration Flashcards
8 Areas of Sensory System
Interoception, proprioception, visual, auditory, smell, taste, touch, vestibular
Sensory Integration
-Brain’s ability to organize sensory input for use in functional BEHAVIORS
-deficits lie in perception, organization and coordinated response to sensory info
-feedback loop
-dysfunction caused my neurologically immaturity
Sensory Processing
-reception, modulation, integration, adn organization of stimuli
-not a reaction we observe
Sensory drives…
motor»_space; social»_space; behavior
Sensory Processing Disorders
Sensory modulation disorder, sensory-based motor disorder, sensory discrimination disorder
Sensory Modulation Disorder
-Difficulty regulating how much of sensory info to utilize
-Failure to orient»_space; Over-orientation
-may be reflected in Sensory seeking/avoiding
- Sensory Over- Responsitivity
- Sensory Under-Responsitivity
- Sensory Seeking/Craving
-Over responsiveness (defensiveness)
-Under Responsiveness (dormancy)
Sensory-Based Motor Disorder
- Dyspraxia
- Postural Disorder
Dyspraxia
-issues with motor planning
-lie in neural activity before execution (ideation and conceptualization)
-delays in motor movement
Praxis
-link to interact with the physical world
-Motor planning but NOT motor skill
Motor Planning Steps
-ideation, construction, execution
Postural Disorders
-poor core strength and endurance, poor balance and body awareness
-move inefficiently
-S/s:
No internal motivation, poor coordination, poor ocular motor, poor gravitational security
Aging & System Processing
Gradual decline in sensory and cognitive processing.
Increase in multisensory processing, ( due to decreased saliency of sensory input from sensory discrimination)
Sensory Discrimination Disorder
-Unable to distinguish certain sensory information from senses
Visual/auditory/tactile/taste/smell/proprioception
Sensory Discrimination Disorder: Proprioception
-Poor body awareness can result in poor posture and seeking of sensory information to give proprioceptive info
-both consious and subconscious activity
-can lead to clumsiness, leaning, and pressure issues
-can be sensory seeking behaviors
Sensory Discrimination Disorder: Vestibular
-Movement processing w/ VOR
-Presents as low muscle tone, poor balance, avoidant of activities, toe walking, lack of visual scanning
Sensory Discrimination Disorder: Tactile
-Ability to discriminate touch and conform to objects and pressure (DCML)
-Presents as difficulty with fine motor skill
-Avoidant of textures
-Hypersensitivity
Sensory Discrimination Disorder: Vision
-Influences hand-eye- coordination, spatial orientation, visual-motor, imagery, mental manipulation.
-Avoidant of visual stimuli, or hesitant to go play
Sensory Discrimination Disorder: Auditory
-Negative resposnes to loud noises, difficulty focusing with background noise to overstimulation
-Connection to limbic system
Sensory Discrimination Disorder: Taste and Smell
-Hypersensitivity to tasets and smells
-Avoidance of certain places or people due to associations
-Olfactory is only system directly related to limic system.
Sensory Discrimination Disorder: Interoception
-perception of state of body from viscera
-brain does not construct this experience
-pain/hunger/heartbeat/temp
Sensory Modulation Disorder: Failure to orient
Subtle limbic response:
-Lack of attention
-shutdown or withdrawal
Lack of synchrony
Delay in sensory processing
Sensory Modulation disorder: Over Orientation
Overt limbic response:
-Imploding or exploding
-escalation, avoidant
-fight or flight, fight or freeze, shutdown or withdrawal
Lack of Synchrony
Delay in sensory processing
Motor vs Sensory Development
-Early movements are similar to CPGs that are precursors to sensory informatiion
-after early movements are down, sensation takes over to drive movement
