Sensory Flashcards
Sensory reception
Process of receiving data about external or internal environment through the 5 senses
Sensory perception
Conscious process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting data from the senses into meaningful information
4 conditions to receive data
A stimulus present
A receptor/sense organ receives the stimulus in order to invert it to a nerve impulse
The nerve impulse must be conducted along a nervous pathway from the receptor/sense organ to the brain
A particular area in the brain must receive and translate the impulse into a sensation
Reticular activation system (RAS)
Poorly defined network that extends from hypothalamus to medulla, mediating arousal, monitors and regulates incoming stimuli
Presbyopia
Loss of elasticity in lens of eye leading to decrease in eye’s ability to change shape of lens to focus
Macular degeneration
Most common cause of legal blindness, drusen deposits in retina
Presbycusis
Loss of high frequency hearing
