8 steps for planned change
- Recognize symptoms that indicate a change is needed
- ID the problem to be solved
- Determine and analyze alternative solutions
- Select a course of action from possible alternatives
- Plan for making the change
- Implement the course of action
- Evaluate the effects of change
- Stabilize the change
Explicit power
Elected leaders have this power by virtue of their position
Implied power
No designated leadership but have power based on personality, more able to influence
Qualities of a leader
Commitment to excellence, problem-solving, trustworthiness and integrity, respectfulness, accessibility, empathy and caring
Autocratic/directive/authoritarian
Leader assumes control over decisions and activities of the group
Democratic/participative
Sense of equality among the leader and other participants; decisions/activities shared
Laissez-faire/nondirective
Leader relinquishes power to group so that an outsider can’t ID leader of group
Servant
Begins with natural feeling that one wants to serve
Quantum
Leadership needs to move beyond traditional modes
Organizations & members work collaboratively
i.e. COVID pandemic
Transactional
Task & reward
Members agree to satisfactory salary and working conditions in exchange for commitment and compliance to leader
Transformational
Challenge others to grow personally and professionally to learn;
Key component of organizations that achieve magnet status
Avoiding
Awareness of situation but parties decide to ignore or avoid resolution; problem will resurface later but will be worse
Collaborating
Joint effort to resolve conflict; win-win
Determine priority common goal; mutual responsibility
Competing
Win for 1, lose other
May be used when one party has more knowledge in situation or because of safety
Compromising
Both parties must be willing to relinquish something of equal values
Cooperating & accomodating
One party makes conscious decision let other group win and may collect IOU for the future
Original loss may result in more positive future outcome
Smoothing
Covers the problem, but no real solution is made
ex. Costco pizza & VS machines
Reduces emotional conflict

Not trained to start IVs (addtl training)
CanNOT initiate cp, new edu, DC
CanNOT change dressing on dialysis catheters (addtl training)
