Sensorimotor Stage (Piaget) Flashcards
sensorimotor stage
- first stage of piaget’s stages of dev
- infants learns about world through their senses and gains motor dev
- six substages
substages of sensorimotor stage (6)
- Simple Reflexes
- First Habits + Primary Circular Reactions
- Secondary Circular Reactions
- Coordination of Secondary Circular Reactions
- Tertiary Circular Reactions
- Internalization of Schemes
Simple Reflexes
- first substage of sensorimotor stage (newborns)
- only have automatic reflexes
First Habits + Primary Circular Reactions
- second substage of sensorimotor stage
- some automatic reflexes become voluntary & can turn into habits (ex: sucking for nursing –> sucking thumb)
- infant develops primary circular reactions
circular reaction
infant purposely trying to reproduce a pleasurable event that happened by chance
Secondary Circular Reactions
- third substage of sensorimotor stage
- secondary circular reactions (focused on outside world) create schemas
- ex: shaking rattle repeatedly
Coordination of Secondary Circular Reactions
- fourth substage of sensorimotor stage
- infant’s behavior becomes more coordinated/goal directed
- infant cries if desired results don’t occur
Tertiary Circular Reactions
- fifth substage of sensorimotor stage
- infant experiments and tries new things
- ex: throwing rattle to see what happens
Internalization of Schemes
- sixth/final substage of sensorimotor stage
- infant can use symbols & think about object without seeing it
- infant develops object permanence
- can occur as early as 4 mos
primary circular reaction
circular reaction related only to baby’s own body
secondary circular reaction
circular reaction focused on the external world
tertiary circular reaction
experimental circular reactions, sometimes including using one thing as tool to use with something else
object permanence
knowing an object still exists when can’t see it
