Cognitive Issues & Socioemotional Dev of Late Adults Flashcards
subtypes of neurocognitive disorders (7)
- neurocog. disorder due to parkinson’s disease
- cog. declines due to vascular disease
- neurocog. disorder due to HIV infection
- traumatic brain injury
- substance/med induced neurocog disorder
- prion disease
- alzheimer’s disease
neurocog. disorder due to parkinson’s disease
symptoms: anxiety, depression, hallucinations, personality changes
cog. declines due to vascular disease
- example = neuro issues after stroke
- risk factors: hypertension, smoking, obesity
neurocog. disorder due to HIV infection
- occurs in ~25% individuals w/HIV
traumatic brain injury
- caused by injury to brain (i.e. bad blow to head)
- symptoms: difficulty concentrated, slowed processing, other cog. impairments
substance/med induced neurocog disorder
- symptoms: motor problems, severe concentration problems
prion disease
- extremely rare
- caused by transmissible agents called prions
- ex = mad cow
- transmissible via corneal transplantation, injection, physical contact w/contaminated matter
compensation
change behaviors to function (i.e. rest after exercising)
selection
choose what activities can do as aging
optimization
maintain what you can through practice even with declines in other areas
selective optimization w/compensation theory
successful aging = selection + compensation + optimization
