Sensation vs Perception Flashcards
Sensation?
conversion of physical stimuli into neuro signals
Perception?
processing of sensory info to make sense of its significance
Sensory receptors?
respond to stimuli and trigger and electrical signal
Weber’s Law?
the just-noticeable difference for a stimulus is proportional to the magnitude of the stimulus, and this proportion is constant over most of the range of possible stimuli
Signal detection theory?
the effects of nonsensory factors, such as experiences, motives, and expectations, on perception of stimuli
Response Bias?
examined using signal detection experiments with four possible outcomes: hits, misses, false alarms, and correct negatives
Visual Pathway?
retina-> optic nerve -> optic chiasm -> optic tract -> lateral geniculate nucleus of thalamus -> visual radiations -> visual cortex
What does the cochlea do?
detects sound
Utricle and Saccule?
detects linear acceleration
Semicircular canals?
detects rotational acceleration
Auditory pathway?
cochlea -> vestibulocochlear nerve -> medial geniculate nucleus of thalamus -> auditory cortex
what detects smell?
olfactory chemoreceptors in olfactory nerves
What detects taste?
taste buds in papillae
somatosensation?
four touch modalities: pressure, vibration, pain, temp
kinesthetic sense?
proprioception- ability to tell where one’s body is in space
