Sensation & perception Flashcards
what is sensation?
stimulation of the sensory apparatus
what is perception?
minds inferences of sensory info; interpretation of the sensory apparatus’ stimulation
Primary visual pathway lateral geniculate route
optic nerve -> optic chaism -> optic tract -> LGN -> occipital lobe -> v areas
what half of the eye’s visual field crosses?
inner
What cells are in the LGN
Magnocellular
parvocellular
Koniocellular
Secondary visual pathway: retino tectal route
eye -> superior colliculus -> pulvinar -> temporal lobe & parietal lobe
Perception is
adequate not accurate
Ecological approach of perception
Gibson 1950
- light contains all info we need, we just need to detect it with out ECOLOGICAL OPTICS
- NO representation in the brain: only an optic array
Positives of Ecological approach of perception (3)
- sees visual scene as dynamic
- inc role of enviro
- relationship with motor and visual system
Perception is top down or bottom up
both
Probs with Ecological approach of perception (2)
- ignores all past the eye
- doesn’t explain how info is gathered
Constructivist approach to perception
Gregory (1970): perception is influenced by top down info
- EXTERNAL SENSATION + OUR WORLD HYPTHS = perception
- make presumptions about what we see & making best guesses accordingly
- too much info reaches the eye so we make best guesses based on our hypotheses
support with Constructivist approach to perception (2)
- Charlie chaplin illusion; unlikely things seen as likely things
- when perception is ambiguous we can make multiple hypotheses
probs Constructivist approach to perception(2)
- why do illusions occur if we know theyre illusions
- how to neonates perceive if all top down?
Computational approach - MARr
-starts by being bottom up & ends with top down influence
Primal sketch: raw - edges of image
Full- joins edges to outline
2.5 dimensional:adds colour, depth cues & shading
3D sketch: matched with world knowledge
