semantics
sub field of linguistics that studies meaning in languages
lexical semantics
the meaning of words and other lexical expressions, including the meaning of relationships among them
compositional semantics
concerned with phrasal meanings and phrasal meaning are assembled
sense
mental representation of its meaning or some kind of concept
reference
the relationship a word has to the world
mental image
meaning that is stored in our minds
hyponymy
word X is the hyponymy of word Y if the set that is the reference of X is always included in the set that is the reference of Y
sister terms
if their reference is on the same level in the hierarchy
synonymy
two words with the same exact reference
antonymy
the basic notion is that the two words are opposites. the words must be related but their meaning must directly contrast each other in a significant way
complementary antonymy
there is nothing that is part of both X & Y reference. everything is either X or Y or neither but never both
gradable
represents points on a continuum; rather than it being one or the other, it can between the two.
converse
two opposing points of view or change in perspective
proposition
claim expressed by a sentence
truth value
characteristic of a proposition that it can be true or false
