Self Reporting Techniques Flashcards
What are the 2 self report techniques
Questionnaires and interviews
Whats a questionnaire
They are a written method of collecting data from participants due to the being made up of a pre-set list of written questions to where the particpant responds (the researcher doesn’t need to be present)
Strengths of a questionnaire
Can be distributed to lots of people, collect large amounts of data quickly and the researcher doesn’t need to be present while completing, making them cost effective
Straightforward to analyse (especially if closed questions are used), statistical data can quickly be converted to graphs and charts for comparison
Limitations of questionnaires
Responses might not be truthful, respondents might present themselves in a positive way, and not be honest = social desirability bias
Whats an interview and what are the different types
An interview is a face to face or online interaction between an interviewer and interviewee.
Structured interview
Unstructured interview
Semi-structured interview
Whats a structured interview (strength and limitation)
A list of pre-determined questions asked in a specific order is created prior to the interview
Strength = easy to replicate, due to the standardised format the interview can be repeated = reduced differences between the interviewers
Limitation = interviews can’t elaborate, of they were to give an answer that needed explaination, the interviewer wouldn’t be able to ask why or deviate from the topics
Whats an unstructured interview and strengths and limitations
No set questions, there is a general topic that needs to be discussed but the interaction is free flowing and the interviewee is encouraged to elaborate
Strength = greater flexibility, the interviewer can ask lots of different questions regarding this specific interviewee and points can be followed up, more likely to create a larger insight and collect unexpected information
Limitation = increased risk of interviewer bias, the interviewer can ask leading questions that will lead to a specific answer, this leads to more opportunities for unconscious cues
Whats a semi-structured interview
A list of questions have been worked out before the interview but the interviewer is allowed to ask further questions based on answered front he interviewee
What are open questions, strength and limitations
Qualitative data is produced from these questions
Strength = more info given in lots of details and reasonings for answers
Limitation = difficult to analyse, variety of answers ,meaning it will be hard to produce conclusions
What are closed questions and strengths and limitations
These give the respondent a limited choice answers and produce quantitative data
Strength = easy to analyse, can create graphs and charts from the statistics produced, conclusions can be drawn
Limitation = responses are restricted and subjective, if on the scale
