Sampling Flashcards
What are the types of sampling
Random
Systematic
Stratified
Opportunity
Volunteer
Whats a random sample
Every person in the target population has an equal chance of being selected. It does this by giving everyone in the target population a number and them using a random number generator, to pick participants
strengths and limitations of ranodm sampling
Strengths = unbiased, CV and EVs are controlled and no researcher bias, increase internal validity
Limitations = time consuming, it will be Tim consuming it create a list of the whole target population and some particpants might refuse to take part
Whats systematic sampling
Participant’s are picked using a set ‘pattern’. The first participant will be picked randomly then the nth participant from the list.
strengths and limitations of systematic sampling
Strengths = unbiased, the laws of probability would suggest that the sample should ve overall representative of the whole target population
Strengths = reduced researcher bias, the researcher isn’t picking the particpants themselves
Limitations = Time consuming, a list of the whole population os required
Whats is stratified sampling
It involves splitting the population into subgroups, then randomly selecting particpants from the subgroups, in proportion to what they actually occur in the population
strengths and limitations of stratified sampling
Strengths = most representative sample because the characteristics of the target population are represented, can be generalised
Strength = reduced researcher bias
Weakness = time consuming to make the subgroups
Weakness = doesn’t provide you with a complete representative sample, as some proportions ma be incorrect as people can’t reflect in the same way, complete representation isn’t possible
What is opportunity sampling
Obtaining the people who are the nearest/easiest to obtain
strengths and limitations of opportunity sampling
Strength = quick, convenient because you are asking the closest people, cheap and quick
Limitation = not representative of the whole population because they are only using people who are available
What is volunteer sample
This is when particpants select themselves by responding to an advertisement for a study
strengths and limitations of volunteer sampling
Strength = participants are willing, due to them selecting themselves they are going to b participate with full potential, more likely to engage
Limitation = volunteer bias, particpants may share the same traits, generalisation will be limited
