define unstructured interview
works like a conversation due to no set questions
general aim is that a certain topic will be discussed and interaction tends to be more free flowing

- risk of interviewer bias
- hard to analyse data
- interviewee may lie for social desirability
define semi structured interview
list of questions that have been worked out in advance but interviewers are also free to ask follow up questions based on previous answers
how to design an interview
- interview schedule (list of questions)
- schedule should be standardised to reduce bias
- interviewers take notes or record
- one on one but group interviews can be used in clinical settings
- quiet rooms, start with neutral questions, answers are confidential
