assessment of scientific work by others who are specialists in the same field to ensure any research intended for publication is of a high standard
what are the 3 aims of peer review
- to allocate research funding
- validate the quality and relevance of the research
- suggest any amendments
what are the 3 problems with the peer review process
- anonymity
- publication bias
- maintaining status quo
why is anonymity a problem with peer review
reviewers may use anonymity to negatively affect other researchers
why is publication bias a problem with peer review
journals may prefer to publish headline research to increase the readership of their journal. They also tend to favor studies with more positive results
why is maintaining the status quo a problem with peer review
reviewers are usually established researchers so may be less likely to pass innovative research. Especially if it contradicts their research which may slow down the process of the research
