SRRS

LCU: Life changes rated on a scale of 1-1000, calculated by taking mean average and dividing it by 10
HSUP
Kanner et al
hassles and uplifts scale
Self-report to measure DH’s frequency, severity and impact on SRD
uplifts scale has 135 items in 7 categories, while hassles scale has 117
Categories: friends, practical, confederations, chance, occurrences, health
Levels of severity: somewhat, moderately, extremely sever
Validity
valid in measuring stress as personal/ subjective
VS Validity
SR mainly ask about general categories, not specific events
- can be interpreted differently
Dohrenwend et al
- P asked on the meaning of certain items
- had varying responses
Contamination Effect
SR mix causes and effects of stress
SRRS and HSUP are meant to predict SRD, but items on questionnaire overlap with symptoms of illness (effect)
personal illness is an item on SRRS
- been ill = stress = ill
not the best predictor of SRD but reflect illnesses experienced
Subjective VS Objective
SR are subjective as responses depend on individual perception/ memory
should use scientific/ objective measures of stress
- such as those measuring physiological responses
