Drug Therapy^ Flashcards
Drug Therapy
used to inhibit the psychological response in which in turn deals with the emotional symptom
Benzodiazepines
working on a neural system brain
increase GABA (inhibitory neurotransmitter)
- has a calming effect on the brain
binds the receptor on post-synaptic neurons
- encourage GABA to bind and effect
Example: Valium
Research Support of BZ
randomised controlled trials
placebo group VS BZ group (randomly allocated)
double-blind
Baldurin et al
- reviewed and BZ group were better with dealing with stress
Beta-Blockers
work on cardiovascular system
beta-adrenergic receptor sites on diff organs in the body
- receptor sites where (nor)adrenaline bind to are blocked so they can’t bind
BBs won’t operate on brain
- patient can still stay alert
Research Support of BBs
Kelly
- review evidence of effectiveness
- help reduce anxiety from everyday issues
Haynes & Schulz
- increase effectiveness when combined with other drugs (BZs)
VS Research Support of BBs
only removes symptoms, not causes
causes are usually chronic, but drugs are temp
stop when no longer using
Side Effects
BZs
- drowziness
- weight gain
- impulsive beh
- respiratory issues
BBs
- increase blood pressure too much
- esp. dangerous for patients with other conditions
Economic Benefit
deal quickly and can go back to work
- 9 - 12 sessions
increases taxes
usually taken for 3 months once a day
- not disruptive as therapy
VS Economic Benefit
short term relief
don’t deal with causes
can relapse = out of work longer
