Physiological Measures^ Flashcards
Skin Conductance Response
based on the fight or flight response
experience stress, the autonomic NS is aroused
more sweat
- detected by the hand with electrodes attached
weak electric current is used for the electrodes to measure amount of electricity conducted
can be measured in microSiemens
Skin Conductance
more we sweat = more conductance
tonic - not experience a stimulus (baseline)
phasic - have a stimulus to trigger
- SCR follows a typical pattern (takes 4-5 sec)
Measure
heart rate
respiration
blood pressure
makes a polygraph
Other Physiological Measures
blood pressure increases with pos and neg stress
adrenaline = acute stress biomaker
cortisol = chronic SBiomaker
can be measures in urine and blood
levels vary throughout the day
- need a baseline measure of low stress
- can draw accurate comparisons
cortisol can be measured in saliva,
: preferable to take samples all day
Individual Differences
P vary in SCR
Stabiles – low levels of SCR at rest
Labiles – high at rest
Research only accounts for and compare tonic and phasic, but ignore ID
Researchers need to decide if their P are stabiles or labiles for more accuracy
Scientific Measures
More than SR
SCR, hormones, blood are linked to stress
But need to account for ID so need to have baseline for each P to have unbias results
