What is meant by a self report technique?
Any method where the person is asked to explain their own feelings, opinions, behaviours on a topic
Do closed questions produce qualitative or quantitive data?
Quantitative
Do open questions produce qualitative or quantitive data?
Qualitative
Give an example of an open question when asking someone their opinion of school
Do you like school?
Give an example of a closed question when asking someone their opinions of school
Select your opinion on school:
Love, like, dislike, hate
Give a strength of using open questions in psychological research
Provides full and in-depth information
Give a limitation of using open questions in psychological research
Difficult to compare answers
Give a strength of using closed questions in psychological research
They’re easier to answer
Give a limitation of using closed questions in psychological research
Participants may not be able to answer in the way they want to
Give a strength of using questionnaires in psychological research
Cost effective
Can be easily analysed
How might social desirability bias affect the way people respond to a question in a self-report study?
People would change their answers to look appropriate and are part of the participant’s private life. They’re likely to put their untrue response and put the socially acceptable answer
Why may using interviews rather than questionnaires be a better method for research in psychology?
They’re a live encounter
Can create rapport between researcher and participant
Can be encouraged to elaborate
What is the difference between a structured and unstructured interview?
Structured questions are pre-set in a. fixed order whereas in unstructured they’re not
Give two strengths of using structured interviews in psychological research
-Easy to replicate
-Taken more seriously
Give two limitations of using structured interviews in psychological research
-Social desirability bias
-Not free to answer in the way they want to
Give two strengths of using unstructured interviews in psychological research
-Provides rich data
-Can ask follow up questions
Give two limitations of using unstructured interviews in psychological research
-Bias
-Difficult to make comparisons
How can investigator bias be reduced in interviews?
-Standardise all questions
-Have a different researcher carry out the interview rather than the main researcher
What is the difference between quantitive and qualitative data?
Quantitive is usually given as numbers whereas qualitative is non-numerical
Which research methods produce quantitive data?
Experiments, questionnaires with closed questions
Which research methods produce qualitative data?
Interviews, case studies, observations
Give a strength and limitation of quantitative data
S= comparisons can be made, more objective
L= statistics may have little meaning, not in depth
Give a strength and limitation of qualitative data?
S= deep understanding, in depth
L= difficult to replicate, difficult to make comparisons
What is the difference between primary and secondary data?
Primary is collected for the purpose of the investigation whereas secondary has already been collected
What is meta-analysis?
The process of of combining the data from a large number of studies that have been carried out into a particular area of study to see if the findings are consistent
