What is a lab experiment?
An experiment that takes place in a controlled environment
What is a strength and limitation of lab experiments?
Strength: high internal validity and replication
Limitation: demand characteristics and lack generalisability
What is a field experiment?
The independant variable is manipulated in a more natural everyday setting
Participants are unaware they’re in a study
What is a strength and a limitation of field experiments?
Strength: high external validity
Limitation: hard to replicate and lack of control over extraneous variables (time of day/weather)
What is a natural experiment?
The experimenter cannot control the independent variable
What is a strength and a limitation of natural experiments?
Strengths: high external validity
LImitations: difficult to replicate and hard to see if IV has caused the effect on the DV
What is a quasi experiment?
Done in a controlled envioronment and the IV is a characteristic of the participant
What are strengths and limitations of a quasi experiment?
Strengths: high internal validity and replication
Limitation: cannot random,ly allocate people to experimental conditions so extraneous variables may affect outcome
