Selective attention and perception Flashcards

1
Q

what is selective attention?

A

The filtering system, filtering out any unnecessary information, and picking out and focusing on the most important parts of display
* selective attention has a limited processing capacity so its important that it processes (takes in) the correct information.

Q

what problems do cognitive learners have with their selective attention?

A
  • picking up subtle clues
  • knowing what to selectively attend to
  • being distracted by irrelevant stimili and selectively attending wrong cues

Q

Adaptations for cognitive learners to help them select the right information

A
  • larger ball/bat
  • sponge ball
  • brightly coloured ball
  • make the environment more closed to avoid distractions

Q

How can a coach help the process of selective attention?

A
  • practice is the presence of an audience/ difficult display, to work on blocking out distractions
  • mental rehersal and visualisation
  • highlight specific cues for performer to take in

Q

whats the DCR process ?

A

perception consists of 3 processes:
- detection
- comparison
- recognition

Q

whats detection and give an example ?

A

Brain identifies that stimulus is present. In sport there is more than one stimulus so it is vital that we attent to the correct stimuli. Beginners often attend to wrong stimulus, and thats why there decision making is poor.
for example,
a tennis player detects using their eyes and ears that the serve has gone down the centre and has been played with topspin.

Q

whats comparision and give an example ?

A

the brain processes the information we sensed by comparing it with past experiences stored LTM. e.g. they compare the stimulus between their STM and LTM to see if they have seen or heared it before

Q

whats recognition and give an example?

A

occurs when we find a match in our memory of a simular stimulus. the information is then perceived. e.g. they match stimulus to a previous experience stored in the LTM
