- Carbamazepine
What is the Antiepileptic Mechanism of Action?
they slow down the central nervous system
What are all the High Yield Concepts of Antiepileptic Medications?
- CNS Depression
- Drug Interactions
- Teratogenic
- Phenytoin side adverse effects
- Carbamazepine adverse effects
- Valproic Acid adverse effects
- Lamotrigine adverse effects
- Levetiracetam
CNS Depression- HYC
-the slowing down of the CNS can cause sedation, ataxia, double vision, and cognitive impairment
-effects similar to alcohol & other CNS depressants
Drug Interactions- HYC
-antiepileptics don’t play nicely w/ other medications
-lots of cytochrome P450 interactions
Phenytoin & carbamazepine can decrease the effects of what?
-warfarin (common blood thinner)
-oral contraceptives (deactivates birth control)
Teratogenic-HYC
can cause birth defects
Phenytoin Adverse Effects
-has narrow therapeutic index
- (gingival hyperplasia) enlargement of gums
-hirsutism (facial hair growth)
-Interferes w/ Vitamin D and Vitamin K levels
What is therapeutic range of phenytoin?
Between 10 and 20
How can clients avoid gingival hyperplasia when taking Phenytoin?
by practicing good dental hygiene
What is Vitamin D and Vitamin K important for?
-Vitamin D is important for bone health
Vitamin K plays a role in blood clots
Carbamazepine adverse effects
- can cause bone marrow suppression
-can decrease sodium levels
