BPH Medications Flashcards
Patho of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
-the bladder holds urine. Urine leaves the bladder via the urethra.
- In men, there is an organ surrounding the urethra called the prostate.
- In healthy men, the prostate is about the size of a walnut. -Its major purpose is to produce fluid used in ejaculation.
-BPH is a condition in which the prostate gets too large (up to 4 times larger than normal). This compresses the urethra, making it difficult to void.
Signs and Symptoms of BPH
-trouble starting to urinate (hesitancy).
-sudden urge to urinate (urgency).
- urinate more often (frequency).
-Urinating is sometimes painful (dysuria).
- increased amounts of postvoid dribbling.
What are the 2 main medication Options for BPH?
alpha1 adrenergic blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors
Alpha1 Adrenergic Blockers You Should Know
- Prazosin
- Tamsulosin
which medication end in the suffix -osin.
Alpha1 Adrenergic Blockers
Alpha1 Adrenergic Blockers Common Uses
-prescribed for BPH
-relax the urethra to help pass kidney stones
-not used for hypertension due to it causing postural hypotension
Alpha1 Adrenergic Blockers Mechanism of Action
-relax smooth muscle in the neck of the bladder, allowing urine to flow more freely through the urethra.
-Alpha1 adrenergic blockers also block receptors in the peripheral vasculature, decreasing blood pressure.
Bc Alpha1 Adrenergic Blockers can cause ____ ______, the medications should be taken how and when?
postural hypotension; the client should start with low doses and take it before going to bed
More side effects of Alpha1 Adrenergic Blockers include
-reflex tachycardia
-nasal congestion (dilates the blood vessels)
- inhibition of ejaculation.
5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors You Should Know
- Dutasterde
- Finasteride
which medication end the suffix -asteride
5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors
5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitor Common Uses
- BPH
-male pattern baldness.
5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors Mechanism of Action
-5-alpha-reductase inhibitors block the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT)—the active form of testosterone.
- Since DHT is what triggers the prostate to grow, this halts the growth of the prostate and even shrinks it.
-Since DHT also plays a role in male-pattern baldness, these drugs also help regrow hair.
Why should pregnant women be careful around 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors?
bc it is very lipid soluble and can absorb through skin, pregnant women should don gloves before handling these medications, lest the developing male fetus be harmed.
Can men taking 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors donate blood?
no
