Seeing as Science (2.2) Flashcards
What are 3 practices that influence “professional vision”
- coding (Turn observations into objects of knowledge)
- highlighting (Draw attention to certain features of the situation)
- Producing material representations(figures and charts)
What is perception?
Perceiving an event is not transparent, objective act
but one that is contextually situated
- Bottom-up (processing info as it is coming in) and top down (applying prior knowledge than filling in gaps) influences.
What does transforming perceptual event onto and object of knowledge depend on?
- stimulus
- methods of describing it
- specific context/ motivation
What is Goodwin’s method?
Goal: understanding social interactions and situated tool use.
Primary methods -> Video recordings and transcriptions
How is video recording helpful to perception?
•Preserves conversations, body movements, engagement with artifacts, etc.
•Permits repeated examination of the event
- but limited perspective
How are transcriptions used for perception?
Transform the complicated visual and vocal events into something that can be incorporated into a written format.
There is dif. transcription methods like Jefferson Transcription System
What is coding?
Transforming complicated stimuli into categories that are relevant for analysis.
How do coding schemes organize perception?
- The coding scheme provides a perspective for: Thinking about the stimuli, Perceiving the stimuli, Engaging with the stimuli, Analyzing the stimuli, Communicating about the stimuli
- Perspectives reveal certain features and conceal others
- Conventional coding schemes make comparisons easier within disciplines that use them
Highlighting and Perception
The real world is complicated and attention is a limited resource highlighting plays a role in marking what’s important, it is subjective.
How does graphic representations play a role in perception?
Plays a role in communicating findings, condensed forms of information, they tell stories. Maps and figures often follow conventions.
