Sedatives/Tranquilizers Flashcards
What receptors do Acepromazine block?
Dopamine, alpha-1, beta-1, histamine
What are the 2 most unwanted side effects of Acepromazine?
Vasodilation and hypotension bradycardia (reflex tachycardia), muscle relaxation, lowers seizure threshold
What are the contraindications of Acepromazine?
Cardiac disease, seizures (lowers threshold), liver disease
Special considerations for Acepromazine
Boxers are more sensitive metabolized in liver drug interactions (opioids further decrease respiration) low bioavailability
Clinical uses of Acepromazine
Pre-anesthetic tranquilizer sedation IV, IM, SQ, PO (F=20)
Clinical uses of Prochlorperazine and Promethazine
Anti-emetic
What subclass do Acepromazine, Prochlorperazine, and Promethazine belong to?
Phenothiazines
What subclass do Azaperone, Droperidol, and Haloperidol belong to?
Buterophenones
What receptors do Azaperone block?
Dopamine
Clinical uses of Azaperone
Decrease aggression in pigs tranquilizer declinine in vet med
Clinical uses of Haloperidol
Stop feather plucking
What subclass do Diazepam (Valium), Lorazepam (Ativan), Midazolam (Versed), Alprazolam (Xanax), and Zolazepam belong to?
Benzodiazepines
What receptors do Benzodiazepines work at?
GABA agonist
Clinical uses for Benzodiazepines
Antianxiety anticonvulsant (Diazepam) PO, IM, IV
Side effects of Benzodiazepines
Paradoxical excitement (horses and cats)
