Sedatives Flashcards
Morphine
Pure agonist on both Kappa and Mu
Buprenorphine
Agonist on Kappa, partial agonist on Mu
Butorphanol
Kappa agonist, Mu antagonist
What happens if you give morphine and butorphanol?
Sedation will go down - morphine is mu agonist, butorphanol is mu antagonist
What is a short lasting alpha 2 agonist sedative?
Xylasine
What are moderate lasting alpha 2 agonist sedatives?
Detomidine
Romifidine
What are long lasting alpha 2 agonist sedatives?
Medetomidine
Dexmedetomidine
Side effects of alpha 2 agonist
Vasoconstriction (if a patient is bleeding out, do NOT use these drugs)
Hypoperfusion (worst if hypovolemia)
What receptor do dexmetetomidine and medetomidine block?
Insulin
What are two reversal agents?
Yohibine (Xylazine)
Atipamazole (Dexmedetomidine)
How should you never administer reversal agents?
IV
The vasoconstricted vessels will vasodilation so fast that the blood pressure will drop and can lead to death
What is a side effect of acepromazine?
Vasodilation
Drops blood pressure
Acepromazine side effects are worse in patients with ____ blood protein
Low
How is ace metabolized?
Liver
What is better absorbed when given IM?
Lipossoluble or hydrosoluble?
Hydrosoluble (midazolam)
