history

A

to help sleep b4 barbs, physicians used alcohol and opium

barbs created by a german chemist in 1864

1904 Bayer pharm company = barbitol
1912 Bayer pahrm = phenobarbitol (Luminal)
- treats 80 different disorders

1960s- Benzos created –> took over insomnia and sleep disorders
–> became the most widely prescribed drug

1970s –> barbs mainly used for intracranial pressure

flunitrazepam= date rape drug but more benzos are seen in sexual assault victims

Z drugs (nonbarbs), benzo, barbs all treat anxiety and insomia through GABAa receptors

antihistamines cause drowsiness by blocking action of ACh

Anti-depressants like SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, are useful in treating anxiet disorders

Benzos increase 110% in prescription
- women, aged people increase usage
- Z drugs increasing too and will take over benzoz for insomnia
- they overprescibe benzos

distribution and elimination

A

fast actin drugs= short duration of action

benzo/barb= cross placenta barrier, and in milk of moms

metab of benzos has 2 phases
- 1 rapid to all tissues (2-10 h 1/2 life)
-2 slow (27 -48h 1/2 life)

  • metab of benzo is slowed by alcohol
