Section VI: Spiritual Healing & Prayer Flashcards
Who is Myrtle Fillmore and what role did she play in the New Thought Movement?
Myrtle Fillmore was the co-founder of the Unity School of Christianity, alongside her husband Charles Fillmore. It was her healing after attending a lecture by Dr. E.B. Weeks that sparked the beginning of Unity. She also co-founded the Society for Silent Help which has since been named Silent Unity, a 24/7 prayer ministry, and she authored a children’s faith magazine called Wee Wisdom.
Explain the statement, “There is nothing to be healed; only the presence of God to be revealed.”
“In the midst of all this gloom, we kept looking for the way out, which we felt sure would be revealed. It was! The light of God revealed to us–the thought came to me first–that life was of God, that we were inseparably one with the Source, and that we inherited from the divine and perfect Father. What that revelation did to me at first was not apparent to the senses. But it held my mind above negation, and I began to claim my birthright and to act as though I believe myself the child of God, filled with His life.”

Where does healing originate?
It is from God that the divine idea of health comes. “The Christ presence within our own souls is the Great Physician who has wisdom and power to heal and to adjust in divine order every function of our body temples. Turning within to Him, we receive that guidance, that assurance, that healing for which our souls long…”
“It is the God in the midst of us that frees and heals.” Healing comes from the Spirit within.

What part do Denials and Affirmations play in the healing process?
Denials and affirmations are tools to help us change our thoughts. Denial is the erasing, the cleansing, and the releasing from consciousness ALL beliefs, thoguhts, and concepts contrary to TRUTH. Inharmonious conditions are dissolved when denials are properly used, and we make way for good thoughts, true thoguhts, loving and kind emoting.
Affirmations are statements of Truth used to establish in our consicousness the Truth about God, humankind, and the universe.
Define Prayer and its purpose?
Prayer is communion between humankind and God, taking place in the innermost part of man’s being. The purpose of prayer is not to persuade God to do our bidding but to let God endow us with God’s own gift of perfection.

Are all prayers answered?
All prayers are answered by the Father. Whenever a prayer remains unanswered in the manifest realm, we can be sure that somewhere there is a closed door between us and the Giver; for every prayer of every soul represents some need that in its purified form, God is seeking to push forth into the manifest world.
There are many ways in which we limit our capacity to receive an answer to our prayers. Fear, doubt, worry always close the inlet through which the answer would flow into visibility for they carry us further from the Giver instead of into His presence.

What is an effectual prayer?
Effectual prayer is faith with expectancy and vision. Faith without expectancy and vision is not effectual. Effectual prayer is prayer that produces the desired outcome and brings about positive change in one’s life.
“Our capacity to receive is built by faith, vision, and expectancy, and the greatness of our faith, the height of our expectancy, the steadfastness of our vision sets the measure.
The secret of effectual prayer is to enter into the God consciousness, to rise in mind to the plane of Spirit. True prayer is entering into God [higher or expanded] consciousness. Note that there is no mention of lanugage. The language we use is irrelevant. What matters its the person we become in prayer.
“Only those who become quiet and listen become still enoguh to hear the “still small voice” that gives this assurance. Such an assurance builds and strengthens faith, and it is only those who have faith in the ability and willingness of God to answer their prayers that are capable of receiving.”

What does it mean to pray amiss?
“To pray amiss is to desire the gifts more than we desire the Giver, to ask for things more often than asking for knowledge of the law and the strength and power to use it aright.”
To pray amiss is to ask, beg, or beseech God for particular outcomes without a proper understanding of who God is and who we are in God. To pray amiss is to remain in a consciousness of materiality or from a perspective of selfishness without raising our prayers and our consciousness to the spiritual realm; it is to ask for a change in our circumstances without committing to the accompanying change in our mind.
