Why do less women participate in sport?
- womens events get less media covarge, fewer role models to inspire people
- Less sponsorship meaning there are less opportunities for women to do sport at a higher level and earn money
- sterotyped womens and mens sports
- less support from peers and family
How does ethnicity affect participation?
- religious beliefs may not allow people to participate in some activities due to the expectations for that sport(e.g. Muslim women are expected to cover their bodies and therefor cant wear swimming costumes.
- May have grown up with family participating in a sport and therefore ore inclined to play that sport
- racial abuse causing loss of confidence
How do socio-economic groups affect participation?
- cant afford equipment or fee’s
- area in which you live may not have specialist facilities
- Working harder hours mean you wont have time
How are sports commercialised?
Through advertisement and the selling of specific sport or team inspired products
What is the golden triangle?
Shows how sport, sponsorship and the media are all linked
How can sponsorship sometimes be bad?
- competition between players within teams
- players have to fulfil contracts like turn up at a TV advert
- can be limited to which products they can be seen using
- the sponsorship can sometimes be too powerful and be able to influence the teams playing style or squad
What are the different types of sponsorship?
financial
clothing and equipment, including footwear
facilities.
What are social groups?
people who interact with one another, share similar characteristics and have a sense of unity
What are engagements patterns?
trends in involvement in sport
What is a stereo-type?
a wildly held, over simplified idea or belief about a type of person
What is a socio economic group?
a groups place within society - depends on occupation, education, income, wealth and where they live
What is sponsorship?
where a company pays money/provides goods/services to a team or individual in return for advertising their goods.
What is the golden triangle?
shows how: -sport spectators -sponsors -media relate
what are the relationships in the golden triangle
- viewers require the media to watch at home
- media require sponsorships to earn money
- sponsorships require the viewers to see their product and buy it
What are social cultural influences?
The effect different classes have on participation in sport
What are the barriers to participation in sport for women?
- lack of opportunities (not expected to be into male dominated sports)
- sport is male dominated (intimidated or feel like an outsider)
- less media coverage (not role models or inspiration)
What are the stereo typical views that can put women of playing sport?
- women lack the physical attributes
- being competitive is not feminine
- women should be looking after the family
What is positive discrimination?
the practice or policy of favouring individuals belonging to groups which suffer discrimination. for example having women only football clubs or male only dance classes.
What is channelling?
When ethnic minorities are pushed towards certain sports.
What is the definition of a stereo type?
over simplified widely held idea or opinion of a group of people
What is commercialisation?
process of introducing new products in commerce- activity of buying and selling products at a large scale.
What are the benefits of commercialisation and the golden triangle?
- brings money to the sport
- makes it profitable so things get done more efficiently and then the viewers get a better viewing experience
- sport becomes popularised
- more participants due to seeing it in the media
What are the negatives of commercialisation and the golden triangle in sport?
- sport gets changed to suit the viewer
- expensive to watch
- only popular sports get televised
- media focuses on small things and stuff not to do with the game-stuff gets exaggerated
What are the benefits of media coverage?
- participation increases
- supporters better informed
- easier to attract sponsorship for performers
- develops role models
- attendance to matches increases
what are the disadvantages of media coverage?
- attendance could fall due to people watching at home instead
- sports don’t get equal representation
- loss of privacy for performers
