21
Q

What does the different coloured lighting show

A

The oranges, blues, greens and white all suggest different emotions for the people like sadness, hope, grief to see their relationships with one another or what is below the surface

22
Q

Any other elements of the lighting design

A

6 rectangle duets, spotlight, change of lighting enhances structure

23
Q

Three main components of the aural setting

A

Minor key, gentle piano, train whistles/morse code/muffled speech sound effect

24
Q

What does the minor key show

A

Creates an uncertainty and tense atmosphere to show a sad mood or the danger of what has happened all allowing us to see what’s below the surface

25
Q

What does the gentle piano show

A

It compliment the movement of the man’s solo which suggests grief as it is all slow and reflective. This allows us to see below his surface

26
Q

What does the train whistle/morse code/ muffled speech sounds effects show

A

Suggest a location of being in the underground, below the surface of the city where the london bombings happened. It also suggest danger as people are trying to communicate to see what is wrong

27
Q

What is one of the relationship used and what does it show

A

Contact, the 6 contact duets shows the different human relationships and the varied amount of contact and touching tells us a lot about how they differ

28
Q

What is one of the actions used and what does it show

A

The girl clutching her throat and collapsing to the ground in the crowd during Section 7b (highlight). Shows the uncaring nature of the crowd and allows us to see below the surface of the woman giving up

29
Q

What is one of the dynamics used and what does it show

A

In the man’s solo, the dynamics are very slow and gentle with lots of pauses, shows he is upset and grieving and trying to deal with his inner emotions

30
Q

What is one of the spatial design used and what does it show

A

The linear pathways used in the crowd section show how programmed a busy crowd is to keep moving without even looking around at what is happening

31
Q

Four main choreo devices used

A

Climax, Manipulation of number, highlights, unison

32
Q

When is climax used and why

A

The second climax is when the amber wash comes on and the whole company perform a mixture of solos, duets, and trios. This is chaotic and suggest panic like disaster has struck

33
Q

When is manipulation of number used and why

A

Used when there are lots of people walking across the stage to represent the city crowd compared to the one dancer collapsing.

34
Q

When is highlights used and why

A

In the girl collapsing in the crowd section 7b where she falls onto the ground clutching her throat and crying whilst people emotionlessly walk past her

35
Q

When is unison used and why

A

2 male dancers perform a duet in unison where they circle their hands over each other and then break to different material. Shows they may be going through the same thing and supporting each other through it

36
Q

Four main components of number and gender used

A

Equal male and females, Addition of dancers, 6 different duets, use of 12 dancers

37
Q

What does an equal number of male and females show

A

It allows for an exact number of duets to show each of the human relationships. Also shows how everyone experiences these awful things regardless of gender

38
Q

What does an addition of dancers show

A

Creates this idea of a city crowd linking to the london bombings and life beneath the surface of the city. More dancers creates more chaos and excitement

39
Q

What does the use of 6 different duet show

A

They each show different human relationships like argument, support and love. Give a snapshot into each of their lives and how so many different things can happen to people

40
Q

What does the use of 12 dancers show

A

It allows for a variety of solos, duets and trios like in the climax 2. Shows a wide variety of human relationships and seeing below the surface

41
Q

Two choreo approaches used

A

Showing a phrase and the dancers copying or adapting, task setting

42
Q

How is showing a phrase and the dancers copying or adapting used

A

McGregor shows a phrase and the dancers adapt, he worked with dancers as architectural objects to think with. He suggested things for them too so and in return and they gave creative and inspired material in return. This collaboration allowed him to start to see human relationships play out

43
Q

How is task setting used

A

Task setting was used to set an improvisational task where McGregor set an idea which grew into something the company all explored together. It helped invent movement and generate material helping to see below the surface of each dancers emotions

44
Q

How is task setting used x2

A

Task setting was used to set a choreographic task to problem solve and create movement content involving imagery and a stimuli like the london bombings. This created chaotic movement the dancers used

45
Q

How is task setting used x3

A

Task setting was used to create material for the duets to show different human relationships and dancers below the surface. It shows how different personalities can be portrayed well by different people.

46
Q

Four main components of the structural design

A

Episodic structure, logical sequence, transitions, unity

47
Q

How is an episodic structure shown and why

A

Each section tells a different relationship or emotion in their lives. The story unfolds as each section progresses from before, during and after the bombing

48
Q

How is a logical sequence shown and why

A

The rectangle climax shows people on a train, and the second climax shows the chaos after the bomb paired with the amber wash. After we see the man’s solo and highlight girl in the crowd to show grief and realisation (London bombings)

49
Q

How are transitions used and why

A

Each section has different dancers and new lighting with dancers also entering and exiting the stage showing a different time of day in the events of the bombing

50
Q

How is unity shown and why

A

Unity of the piece is shown through the contact work throughout where dancers constantly touch to show a supportive nature and different human relationships
